over the mother’s day weekend

mother’s day is pretty much my favorite day of the year. i like it even better than my birthday, and i REALLY love my birthday. there’s just so many feels and emotions attached to this day. plus i get breakfast in bed complete with mimosas, am showered with gifts and kisses, and i don’t have to lift a finger to do anything whatsoever. basically, i am queen for the day. seriously, best day of the year.

the weather was absolutely abysmal the entire day. so we all three (well four if you count the few minutes the cat decided to join us) piled on the bed, listened to music and watched the rain fall outside. matt made me a frittata packed with fresh farmers market goodies and a toasted gluten free apple cinnamon muffin. i got chocolate and prints from local artists as well as the unrated 50 Shades of Grey movie from amazon prime. did i mention this is my favorite day ever?

the afternoon proved to be gloomy still, so we lazed about the house spinning records and playing monopoly and video games. i sipped on gin n tonics and got a foot massage. and for dinner, matt grilled out a new york strip and whipped up some tasty sweet potatoes with sautéed greens and peppers.

as soon as kiddo went to bed, we turned on 50 Shades and well yada yada yada.

so, yes indeed. best day of the year.

this past weekend was our second annual parish retreat at camp mitchell, a gorgeous place in the middle of petit jean state park. we always have so much fun on these church trips. i love the people and the fellowship and the surroundings and the peacefulness at the camp. plus, we have a whole lot of fun. we are episcopalians, you know.

while the camp is owned by the diocese of arkansas, it does support the surrounding community. they have a CSA farm that is going on about 2 years where they grow tons of organic fruits and veggies as well as raise free-range chickens.

on saturday, we all walked to the lookout where it is believed that petit jean, a french girl who disguised herself as a boy to follow her love on a ship to the new world, died and was buried. legend has it that her spirit gives the place a mystical quality. i just think it’s really pretty.

we ended the weekend with eucharist in the open air chapel and we sang hymns to the sounds of the wind and birds. i’m always so refreshed and thankful for these quiet weekends. i can’t wait for next year.

SPRING BREAK 2015!!!!

it’s really not all that exciting. it started off with matt going out of town and the city shutting off the gas to our house while they moved the lines underground. that was super fun. cold showers anyone? however that all got taken care of and isaiah and i went on grand adventures around town. he was finn the human and i was lumpy space princess, because OF COURSE. we had lunch with friends and i laid out on the deck. then matt finally got home (yay) just in time for isaiah to get sick and vomit all over his room. loads of laundry later, we watch Adventure Time basically non-stop (because going on our own adventure with a sever tummy ache is not gonna happen). then the tornado warnings fly and the hail rains down and the twister narrowly misses us by 10 miles. all of that and it’s only thursday. maybe spring break 2015 is kinda exciting!

snow day!

we finally got a snow day! after so many failed attempts at winter weather, we got our turn at the white stuff. now, this is basically the south. we are no boston or chicago, so a couple inches will shut our small town down. which makes it really fun. matt and i went on a snowy run then we all three played in the park. well, i take that back. i watched as matt and isaiah played, i was too cold. but it was lovely. and in many places we were the first footprints. i love how quiet and slow it gets here. snow days are the best.

i love love. i also love valentine’s day. i know some people think it’s a stupid holiday forced upon us by hallmark and 1-800-flowers, but i totally dig the idea of setting aside a day to celebrate romance. and this past saturday could not have been more glorious. from the time spent with matt and isaiah to the 65 degree sunny day in mid-february, it was just perfect. we began with gifts. beers, books, cigars, chocolate and panties were exchanged and cards written. matt and i went on a lover’s jog around town then ate lunch at a local spot, outside on the patio. seriously, the day was so beautiful. we hung out on the deck to soak up more sun and sip cocktails and eat raspberry chocolate because why the hell not?

isaiah had the coolest valentine’s in his class and brought home loads of candy. apparently, valentine’s day has become just as lucrative as halloween. candy for dayyyysssssssss. and he got a romantic meatball pizza for dinner, all to himself. because why the hell not?

for our romantic stay-at-home dinner we made tapas and drank champagne, because why the hell not?

i love valentine’s day.

this weekend we started transforming our home into a christmas wonderland. ok, not really, but we set up our tree and train. this lionel set has been in matt’s family for a long time. it was his as a boy and he grew up playing with the little people and train cars, and making the tracks wind all the way around the tree. it was a christmas tradition that matt and his dad started and it’s the sweetest thing to see him carry it on with our son. plus, bonus, the cat is terrified of it and it keeps the cat from eating the tree.

so many thanks

for thanksgiving we drove over to tahlequah, oklahoma where my dad and his new bride live and run a bed and breakfast. needless to say, the accommodations were quite lovely and the food was abundant and delicious. matt and i began our day with a turkey trot around town to work up an appetite worthy of a feast. then we all gathered around the kitchen island and talked and chopped and baked and roasted and drank copious amounts of coffee. when lunch time rolled around, and all the family and friends arrived, we filled up the table with wine and food and laughter.

this holiday kind of marked the beginning of new traditions for our family. we’ve added new people and places. sometimes it’s really hard to allow for change, especially when it comes to something as sacred as holiday traditions that have been around forever. but as i’m realizing as time goes by and i get older, it’s less about the rituals and what we’ve always done, and more about love. choosing love and happiness and not getting caught up in the past, but being in the present and making way for the future. i’m thankful for how i grew up. i’m thankful for what i have now. i’m thankful for what lies ahead.
