we spent the whole day in our┬álounge pants and ate with tiny forks and matt dropped his cigar in the hot tub. wednesday, we went to my sister’s house and had the strangest but totally best christmas eve ever. just a small get together listening to holiday tunes and eating trout and hummus and fancy olives, sipping on cocktails. then hot tubbed in the frosty air with a great view of the stars and christmas lights. we ended the night watching ‘love actually’.

christmas morn we woke up to the sunshine (it has been cloudy every damn day this month) and dressed and made the trip to see my dad. we opened presents, ate lunch and got super sleepy on the sofa. it was a good day. very different, but good. sometimes getting out of traditions is really refreshing. not because traditions aren’t important or fun, but because it gives you a new perspective. and as long as love abides, who cares, right? so we had pork for lunch and not turkey. it was delicious. and so was the wine.

ah but it was a very merry christmas indeed. i got a t-shirt with david bowie’s face on it and a patriots fan towel, and some other stuff but those were my favorites. oh and a vintage wooden rack for my growing vinyl collection. the only sad part is we have to wait 364 days til next christmas.

it’s my favorite day of the year. well, if i’m being totally honest this and my birthday are kinda in a tie for top honors. but really, christmas eve is pretty magical. the anticipation of the big day is at its highest, family is all around, snacks are in abundance, and carols are sung sweetly into the night. i can’t wait to see my sister and nieces and laugh and laugh and laugh. oh, and get into the hot tub with a cocktail because yes that’s happening this year. but best of all is taking time out of the festivities to give worship to the light of the world, who came as a small baby wrapped in clothes, laying in a manger since there was no room in the inn. i have life because he gave me life. and it’s a wonderful life indeed.

this weekend was the annual christmas candlelight service put on by the music department at john brown university. i hadn’t been in years, but my dad said he wanted to go, so on friday night we got dressed up and went. it was a lovely evening full of music and worshipful moments. of course sitting next to 10 and 13 year old cousins was quite interesting. i really never thought i’d have to say ‘stop arm wrestling’ in the middle of a choir concert, but all in all, it was a delight. to be honest, it was just great getting to spend the time with my dad. we don’t hang out nearly enough.

last weekend we also celebrated the annual lighting up of downtown. it’s kind of a big deal. everyone gathers on broadway to sip hot chocolate, listen to christmas carols, see the lights, and watch the parade. this year we had some friends over for some pre-party snacks then we hopped over across the street to watch the parade from our neighbor’s rooftop deck. it was kind of the perfect spot. we had heaters outside to warm ourselves with, wine to fortify us, and even quick access to the indoors for when the outdoor heaters and wine just weren’t doing enough to keep my frail bones toasty. it was a super fun night. i love the little traditions in this quaint small town i live in. and christmas really is the most wonderful time of the year.

this weekend we started transforming our home into a christmas wonderland. ok, not really, but we set up our tree and train. this lionel set has been in matt’s family for a long time. it was his as a boy and he grew up playing with the little people and train cars, and making the tracks wind all the way around the tree. it was a christmas tradition that matt and his dad started and it’s the sweetest thing to see him carry it on with our son. plus, bonus, the cat is terrified of it and it keeps the cat from eating the tree.
