don’t be a weak thinker

i just finished reading ‘american rust.’ it was given to me by a friend and while it’s not necessarily something i would have picked up on my own, i really ended up enjoying this read. the subject matter was a bit heavy, but i loved the writing style, stream of consciousness, as it’s kinda how i typically write. it pulls me in to the characters, allows me to feel what they feel. plus, this book had some really great lines, like ‘don’t be a weak thinker.’

i love that thought. it’s not that we’re weak willed or weak hearted or even weak physically. we just don’t think we can do something so we won’t even try. i want that line to be a kind of mantra for my life. any action or idea starts in the mind and if you can’t imagine big things, you’ll never accomplish them. not necessarily MLK or JFK or Beyonce kinda things, but SOMETHING. go beyond the comfort zone, outside the box, uncharted territory. a challenge. a stretch.

don’t be complacent, average or ‘normal.’ always strive to be more, whatever ‘more’ looks like.

imagine. create. BE. greater than you’ve ever known or understood to be possible. go above and beyond the realm of possibility. surprise yourself. there’s always more, bigger, better, greater out there if we’ll only just believe it to be so. then work hard to make it a reality.

but it all starts with ‘don’t be a weak thinker.’

it was so great to get the heck out of town last weekend. even apart from the greatest super bowl ever played, i had a lovely time in orlando. it was sunny and warm and relaxing. i got a lot of room service meals and read by the pool and ran on the treadmill while watching sportscenter.

i left on friday morning, flying into orlando by way of minneapolis because of course. i bought the book ‘still alice’ at the airport and got almost halfway through it by the time i landed in florida on friday night. (it is such a hauntingly beautiful/sad story. highly recommended) i got lunch and a double gin n tonic at a random restaurant and took a bathroom selfie.

matt had to work on saturday so i busied myself by eating breakfast in bed and working out and reading. for dinner that night we walked a mile to a sushi restaurant for dinner and basically bought the place out of fish. we had quite the feast going. we ended up not eating it all and brought a couple rolls back to the hotel. so we walked the mile back in the dark with a to-go box and the last patriots football balloon from the publix next door to the sushi place. i’m sure we were a sight to see.

sunday. oh super sunday. before the game, matt and i started the day with a run in the sun. it was great to get some fresh air and let out some of the anxiety of waiting for kick off. we also got a sweet visit from our new baby niece everly. she is the cutest little thing. matt’s sister and her husband made the 2.5 hour drive to see us just so we could meet her for the first time. we had lunch together and cooed at the baby. when they left, it was time to get ready for the game. and of course you know what happened next.

i flew home on monday. it was sad because i had to leave matt, but i was happy to get back home to my boy. it’s always nice to get away, but i miss that squishy face when i don’t get to see it every day.

this weekend really did prove how blessed i am. friends took care of my kiddo, i got to experience something great with my husband, and i refreshed myself with a little r&r and little baby kisses. it was a wonderful weekend indeed.

life, lately

in lieu of making a totally unattainable resolution, i like to set small goals for myself in the new year. one of those goals is to read more. i used to be a voracious reader. like stay up til 4 am because i can’t put the thing down and blearily stumble my way through the next day kind of reader. but over the last year or so, i’ve allowed my evil phone and it’s various apps to eat up all my time. that ends now! i am taking back my time and my love of the written word. this month i finally finished the book i bought months ago, and i just read ‘yes please’ (soooooooo good by the way. i underlined basically the whole thing). and yesterday i went to goodwill and bought a stack of new books and a pair of book-reading sweats! i need to wash the sweats but i’ve already started reading ‘slaughterhouse five’ and totally enjoying it. so, if you have any recs for me, i’m asking. i want to expand my horizons and learn about new subjects and genres. so fire away.

also, i want to eat well and drink more tea. and i don’t mean eat healthier, i already do that. i want to eat WELL. good meaningful foods, with thoughtful preparation, that supports local farmers and businesses, and shared with people i love. and drink hot tea because i know too much coffee gives me stomach issues and the shakes.

so that’s what i’m up to lately. what about you guys?
